‘UEFA-FIFA GK of the Year’ Mendy heads to Saudi Arabia to join Al Ahli + up to $200m in salary
Edouard Mendy has confirmed his move to Saudi Arabia.
Al Ahli officially announced the signing of Mendy on the club’s website on Monday (July 29). According to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, the player has signed a three-year contract until June 2026. The deal was finalized after a medical in London, and Mendy will earn a base salary of $12 million, with an option for $3 million.
Ever since Cristiano Ronaldo donned an Al Nasr shirt, Saudi clubs have been breaking the bank to sign big-name European players. With the likes of Leo Varane, Kalidou Koulibaly, Karim Benzema, and N’Golo Kante all arriving in the kingdom, Mendy was tempted and accepted the offer.토토사이트
Mendy is a human victory goalkeeper. After bouncing around the lower leagues, Mendy almost retired at an early age, but his determination and hard work paid off and he made a name for himself at Stade Reims, becoming the best goalkeeper in the Ligue 1 at Stade Rennes. He joined Chelsea in 2020. At the time, Chelsea had a major goalkeeping problem with their first-choice goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabaliga, struggling mightily.
Mendy solved the problem once and for all. He made some incredible saves and Chelsea went on to win the title. Mendy was instrumental in Chelsea winning the UEFA Champions League (UCL) in 2020-21 and was named UEFA Goalkeeper of the Year and Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Goalkeeper of the Year that season. He went on to win the African Cup of Nations for his home country of Senegal. He became the first goalkeeper to represent Africa after Europe.
After rising to the highest level in a short period of time, Mendy has recently lost ground to Kepa. A series of injuries and poor performances have caused him to lose credibility. He has no chance of rebounding at Chelsea. It was widely expected that he would be in the same position under Mauricio Pochettino, so a move this summer was inevitable.
In the end, Mendy left Chelsea for Al Ahli. Al Ahli are affiliated with Jeddah and rival Al Ittihad, the club that Benzema and Kante play for. They have won the Saudi Professional League four times and the King’s Cup 13 times.
Seok Hyun-jun played there, and Dejan and Saric also came from Al Ahli. Currently, the club is home to monster striker Malcung, who had a breakout season at Gyeongnam FC, and Barrow, who was an ace for Jeonbuk Hyundai. Al Ahly, who were recently relegated, are expected to bring in several players, starting with Mendy. Roberto Firmino has also been linked to Al Ahly.
